Printed Brochure
Non-profit organisation | Print design | Visual communication
Early in my career, I designed a pair of brochures for Shakti New Zealand. The brochures were used as the primary method of advertising a two-part community upskilling program.
I designed these brochures in Canva with free-to-use resources. They were distributed digitally on social media and in limited printed quantities.
The two brochures were titled:
Rise: An Ethnic Women’s Leadership Programme
Train The Trainer

Requirements
The design needed to meet several requirements:
The files must be suitable for digital and print publishing
The brochure itself must be in a trifold style
It must include all copy provided by the Program Coordinator
It needs to debut Shakti’s revised logo
Finally, given that Shakti is a non-profit, the brochures could only include free-to-use materials (e.g. no licensed images or fonts)
Process
Part of my design required researching for appropriate free-to-use resources. I ended up using:
License-free scientific images of bees
Poignant quotes from women of colour in positions of power
Photos taken at Shakti’s past events and programs
Design Choices
For my design, I wanted to incorporate several shared themes between both brochures. I decided on using:
Shared colour palette
I used colours inspired by the logo (blue and yellow) to draw attention to certain areas and messages.
I opted for greyscale images to counter-balance the use of bright blues and yellows.
Shared motifs
I used bee and honeycomb motifs to symbolise feminine community development (worker bees are female!)
I used floral motifs to frame the overall brochures. They also symbolise femininity and the product of the bees’ labour (see above)
Shared typefaces
Sans-serif fonts were used to enhance readability and approachability
Permanent marker styled fonts were used to convey community action, personal development, and ‘note-taking’
Examples of representation
In both brochures I used quotes and images that demonstrated ethnic women in community leadership roles
“Shakti is a national not-for-profit community organisation specialised in the area of women’s development, empowerment and domestic / family violence intervention, prevention and awareness.”
